Surfing

Beginner sand bottoms in Weligama, point breaks at Arugam Bay, and a season somewhere on the island every month.

What to expect

  • Lessons with ISA-qualified local instructors
  • Board hire, from soft-tops to performance shortboards
  • Guided dawn patrols to breaks away from the crowds
  • Multi-day surf and yoga camps if you want structure

Where to do it

  • Weligama, beginner, sand bottom, November to April
  • Midigama and Ahangama, reef breaks for intermediates
  • Arugam Bay, right-hand point break, May to September
  • Hikkaduwa, shallow reef, punchy, November to March

Best season

South and west coast November to April. East coast May to September. There is always a working coast.

Good to know

Reef breaks at Midigama and Arugam Bay are shallow and unforgiving, so take a guide on your first session. Rips are strongest at low tide. Wear reef booties on the east coast.
