Mirissa

A crescent of sand with a headland at one end and the best blue whale watching in the Indian Ocean from a harbour ten minutes away.

Mirissa is small: one bay, one hill you can climb in ten minutes, a fishing harbour and a string of beach restaurants that put tables on the sand at dusk. From November to April the continental shelf drops close to shore here, bringing blue whales, sperm whales and superpods of spinner dolphins within an hour of the harbour. The rest of the year it is a quiet swimming beach with a decent point break at the eastern end.

What to see

  • Mirissa beach and Parrot Rock
  • Coconut Tree Hill
  • Mirissa fishing harbour, whale departures
  • Weligama Bay for beginner surfing
  • Secret Beach, west of the bay
  • Stilt fishermen at Koggala

Things to do

  • Take a small-boat whale-watching charter at 6am
  • Learn to surf in Weligama Bay on gentle sand-bottom breaks
  • Eat grilled seafood on the sand at sunset
  • Walk to Secret Beach for a quieter swim
  • Day trip to Galle Fort, 40 minutes west

Best time to visit

November to April for whales and calm seas. May to October brings monsoon swell and rough water.

Common questions

What are the chances of seeing a blue whale?

Around 80 to 90 per cent between December and March, lower in November and April. We use operators who carry marine biologists, limit passenger numbers and keep the legal 100-metre distance.

Is the sea safe for swimming?

In the main bay from November to April, yes. There are rip currents at the eastern end and around Parrot Rock. Between May and October the swell makes swimming unwise on most days.

Is Mirissa good for families?

Weligama next door is better for young children: shallower, gentler and with more space. Mirissa suits couples and confident swimmers.
