Tea Plantation Tour

From two leaves and a bud to a graded cup, on estates 1,900 metres above sea level.

What to expect

  • A field walk with a plucker and a basket of your own
  • Withering lofts, rolling machines, oxidation and firing
  • A formal cupping across grades, from BOP to FBOP to silver tips
  • The chance to buy factory-fresh tea at estate prices

Where to do it

  • Pedro Estate and Damro Labookellie, Nuwara Eliya
  • Halpewatte Estate, Ella
  • Handunugoda near Galle for virgin white tea
  • Amba Estate, Ella, a small-batch social enterprise

Best season

Year round. Plucking happens daily; the western slopes give their best quality January to March, the eastern slopes June to September.

Good to know

Factory floors are wet and machinery is unguarded by European standards. Stay with your guide, tie back long hair and wear closed shoes.
